How to Grow Healthy Duckweed with Long Roots

Why root length changes

Duckweed root length varies with species, light, nutrients, water movement and temperature. Longer roots can appear when plants search the water column for nutrients, but healthy short roots are not automatically a problem.

Conditions that support strong roots

• Keep surface movement gentle so roots are not constantly broken.
• Use a steady 6–8 hour light cycle.
• Avoid sudden changes in fertiliser or water chemistry.
• Allow a modest amount of nitrate from normal aquarium life.
• Thin dense mats so every plant receives light and air.

Benefits for shrimp

Roots trap fine particles and develop biofilm. Adult and baby shrimp may graze among them, especially where the roots meet calmer water. They also soften overhead light and create a sense of cover.

When roots disappear

Strong flow, repeated submersion, rough handling, hungry fish or rapidly changing water can damage roots. Move plants away from the filter outlet and give new growth time to recover.
